Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Program
What is Domestic Violence?
Domestic violence is
when any family member emotionally,
physically and/or sexually abuses another.  It can be caused
by a spouse, ex-spouse, lover, ex-lover, parent , adult child,
sibling or parent of one's child.  A person doesn't have to be
physically abused in order to be battered.  She/he can be
emotionally battered, with equally devastating results.

Domestic violence is rarely and isolated occurrence.  It is a
one way power trip fueled by manipulation, intimidation and
degradation.  It is motivated by the need of one person to
have power and control over another.  It happens over and
over again, increasing in severity.  Abuse does not just go
away.  Many victims believe they brought the abuse on
themselves.  This is not true.  Abusers are solely responsible
for their own actions: no one forces another to commit abuse.

Cycles of abuse start with build-up of TENSION, followed by
an
EXPLOSION, and end up with the HONEYMOON stage, in
which the abuser promises never to do it again.  Victims want
to believe the abuser has had  a real change of heart.
Victims of domestic violence live in constant fear and shame,
as do their children.  Children living in abusive households,
even if not abused themselves, have the same emotional
behaviors as children who are physically abused.  Domestic
Violence is a learned behavior that is handed down from
generation to generation.  Children who grow up in abusive
homes see violence as an acceptable way to solve problems.

Domestic violence occurs in the suburbs, rural areas and
inner cities.  People of every race, creed, religion, income and
class are battered.

Domestic Violence is Against the Law!

In Washington State, there is a law to protect victims from
violence or the threat of violence from anyone with whom a
person is having/has had an intimate relationship.  Victims of
domestic violence are entitled to protection from abuse, and a
Protection Order may be  obtained through the court.  The
Protection Order may order an abuser from the family home
and prohibit acts of violence.
Help is available in acquiring this order for a victim of violence.

Volunteer Opportunities
People are needed for work on the crisis line, children's
program, transportation, clerical and legal advocacy.  People
are needed to provide additional confidential safehomes.  New
opportunities open all the time.  Call Safehome now for more
information.

Remember...
It is not likely to get better.  Most abusers become more
violent with time, unless they get help.  The battering will
probably  get more severe and more frequent.  Research
shows that children who grow up in violent homes are more
likely to become victims or abusers in their adult relationships.

There is strength in emotional support.  There is safety in
talking with someone who cares.  Confiding in a  caring
person and thinking about alternatives starts positive
change.
